Darwin, Charles - The Various Contrivances by which Orchids are Fertilised by Insects.

London: John Murray, 1899. Second edition, sixth impression. Pp. xvi, 300; 38 woodcuts in text. Publisher's original forest-green cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine, and stamped in blind along the outer borders of the front and rear covers, 8vo. This is Darwin's primary work on plant fertilization. Darwin was keenly interested in the morphology of orchids and how these structures enticed insects to fertilize them. This is Freeman 814; there are only eight John Murray entries in Freeman for ""Fertilisation of Orchids."" Far fewer copies of this Darwin title were printed by Murray compared with his other titles. No ownership marks. Top outer corner clipped front endpaper presumably to remove a previous owner’s name, gilt on spine a little dull but fully readable, rear endpaper only with faint foxing; the text is very bright and clean with no signs of use; a tight copy in very good condition..
