Henry French - A Typewritten Purchase Order by Prohibitionist-Republican Henry French

San Jose, California: Henry French, 1886. Soft cover. Typewritten letter (one-sided); 8 1/2" x 11"; mild toning and wear along margins; two holes punched to upper margin; good condition. A typewritten letter by Henry French addressed to R. M. Shackleford of Victor Mills, Hollister requesting the shipment of bran and flour. Henry French was born in Cornwall and before emigrating to California, he served in the British Navy on several vessels, including Northumberland, the largest ship in the British Navy. He was also a hero of the Sir John Franklin Rescue Expedition in the 1850s following Franklin's fateful disappearance during an Arctic exploration voyage. After moving to San Jose, California in 1874 he entered the grocery business and became one of the biggest merchants in the Bay Area. He also became prominent in the Prohibition movement, ran for Mayor of San Jose on a hybrid Prohibitionist-Republican ticket, nominated John Bidwell for Governor at the State Prohibition Party Convention, and served as Chairman of the State Central Committee of the Prohibition Party.
