SHULMAN, Max - The Zebra DerbyGarden City, Doubleday & Company, 1946. Hardcover. Illustrations by Bill Crawford. 8vo. Brick cloth with black spoine lettering and front board pictorial stamping. 191pp. Illustrations. Very good. Boards a bit faintly, irregularly sunned, else text block tight and fine; faint floral mustiness. A tight and nice first edition of the third title by the American writer and humorist (1919-88) best remembered for the short story character "Dobie Gillis." Front flyleaf inscribed and signed huge and bold "To / Margaret Carlson / with best / wishes -- / Max Shulman" in blue ink -- beneath which another hand pens "and his friend, / Dowie" (identity here unknown -- but intriguing!). .
