ROY CHRISTIAN - Nottinghamshire

London England, B. T. Batsford Ltd, 1974. First Edition, Binding: Cloth, Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall 0713427647 Hardback Hardback. First Edition. Ex-library with ex-library markings. Previous owners ex-libris name sticker to inside cover. Shelf wear to edges of D/J. The author loves Nottinghamshire in all its aspects, and knows them intimately. He has lived both in the county itself and jhust across the border in Lincolnshire, and for the purposes of this book he has re-visited all his old haunts, as well as a few which he had happened not previously to know. His approach is primarily a topographical one, that he is concerned mainly with buildings and places. But since he writes seletively he allows himself space to dilate at readable length on those towns or villages, churches or houses which interest him most. Places like Newark, Wollaton Hall and Welbeck Abbey are thus given the space their uniqueness deserves. As well as topography, however, the author is as concerned with the figures in the landscape; which is as well, as the County has more that its fair share of worthies: figures as diverse as Henry Ireton. Samuel Butler, Earl Howe, Major Cartwright, Thomas Cranmer and Erasmus Darwin (never to mention Robin Hood). Admirable photographs illustrate a book which is both delightful and informative. Illustrated. 204 pp.
