Original printed wrappers bound with bound (front cover restored). Second enlarged edition (first 1886). Séraphin Couvreur (1835-1919), French sinologist and Jesuit, came to China in 1870. He spent the greater part of his life at the Jesuit residence at Sien-hsien, where he was professor at the Seminary. Couvreur was the creator of the EFEO Chinese transcription method which was used in most of the French speaking world to transliterate Chinese until the middle of 20th century when it was replaced by Hanyu Pinyin.
