Portrait of the author + titlepge in frame of printers' ornaments. . 16mo marbled leather with gilt rules to compartmentalize the spine with red gilt title label and gilt dentelles [edges + head & foot of spine somewhat worn] Frontispiece + titlepage + 216pp The top margin is often cut short affecting the running headline and the page numbers but none of this affects the text which is complete as it has a blank line between headline and text which is never cropped. The paper is uniformly tanned and some 13 leaves have old marginal ink notations or corrections some with show-through to other side of leaf. There is also some minor ink spattering and some dusting but all text is quite neat and entirely legible. May wrote this first in Latin, translated it himself into English in 1650. This is the second edition and there were several more down to the late 1680's. It is An early review of the causes of the civil war from its beginnings to the end of the second war and the reasons for the execution of Charles I. May proclaims a cause of the conflict to be Archbishop Laud`s sympathy for Catholicisim. May also recounts the history of the conflict, noting such battles as Naseby and Torrington. A long term parlimanterian, after his death May was buried in Westminster Abbey, he was exhumed following the restoration.
