The Month was a long running monthly magazine which ran for 139 years from 1864-2001. Two volumes from 1874, May- August and September-December (XXI and XXII) in addition to one volume from 1876 (XXVII) May-August. Blind stamps to front endpapers of all volumes indicate possibly from the library from the Augustinian order in Orlagh, Dublin. The Month was owned by the English province of the Society of Jesus for almost all of its history and was edited by members of the Jesuits. These three volumes are all under the editorship of Henry James Coleridge, the first Jesuit editor of this magazine. Coleridge managed to get many leading figures in English Catholicism to contribute to the magazine's poems, reviews, essays, histories and biographies. In half calf bindings. Externally, rubbed to the extremities and joints. Loss to the corner of spine label to volume XXI. Loss to the tail of the spine to XXII and XVII. Rubbing to the head and tail of spines to all volumes. Front joints to volumes XXII and XXVII are starting but firm. Loss to the tail of rear joints to XXI. Paper covered boards to all volumes are rubbed. Front hinge to XXVI is slightly strained but firm. Mould to front pastedown and endpapers to all volumes though does not affect text. blind stamp of a Bishop with Aug de Orlagh written and therefore probably once belonged to the library of the Augustinian order in Orlagh, Dublin. Internally all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with the odd spot throughout. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
