Field and Hedgerow being the Last Essays of Richard Jefferies, new impression, completed by his widow. Complete with a frontispiece of Jefferies. Toilers of the Field, new impression, with a photographic frontispiece of Jefferies. The Story of My Heart. My Autobiography, being the ninth impression of the first Silver Library edition. Again, featuring a frontispiece of Jefferies. Jefferies valued and cultivated an intensity of feeling in his experience of the world around him, a cultivation that he describes in detail in The Story of My Heart. This work, an introspective depiction of his thoughts and feelings on the world, gained him the reputation of a nature mystic at the time. But it is his success in conveying his awareness of nature and people within it, both in his fiction and in essay collections that has drawn most admirers. Walter Besant wrote of his reaction on first reading Jefferies: "Why, we must have been blind all our lives; here were the most wonderful things possible going on under our very noses, but we saw them not." Five volumes of the original six volumes in The Silver Library collection. All volumes are in their original maroon cloth bindings, with gilt detailing to the spines. Externally, all volumes are sound, with only some light fading to the spines. Internally, all volumes are generally firmly bound, although with the frontispieces detached to Field and Hedgerow and Toilers of the Field.
