William Cowper - The Task, Table Talk and Minor Poems

 1568877929,
London, John Sharpe, 1825. Leather. Three volumes of popular works by William Cowper. Comprising of The Task, Table Talk and his Minor Poems. Illustrated, with 6 plates to The Task, 7 plates to Table Talk and 4 plates to Minor Poems. Collated, complete. The Task is a blank verse poem in six books, often considered to be Cowper's main achievement. It begins with a mock-Miltonic passage on the origins of the sofa before developing into a discursive meditation on nature, retired life and religious faith. Cowper was a popular English poet and hymnodist. He changed the direction of 18th century nature poetry by composing works on every day life and scenes of the English countryside. To many, he is considered a forerunner of Romantic poetry. In full morocco bindings with gilt stamped detailing to the front boards and spines. Externally, very smart with just some minor rubbing to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Gift inscriptions to the front pastedowns of all volumes dated 1835. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with the odd spot throughout. Very Good . Ill.: Various. Very Good .
