William Cowper; Robert Southey (ed.) - The Works of William Cowper; Comprising His Poems, Correspondence, and Translations.![]() London, H.G. Bohn, 1854. Leather. Five volumes from Bohn's illustrated edition of Cowper's complete works, edited by the poet Robert Southey William Cowper was a forerunner of the Romantic poets of the late 18th century; his work celebrated nature and everyday life where his contemporaries concerned themselves with comparatively grandiose matters. Southey, the editor of this copy was himself a Romantic poet and counted William Wordsworth and Samuel Coleridge amongst his friends. Although he is not as well known in modern times, he was a prominent literary figure during his lifetime; serving as poet laureate from 1813 until his death in 1843. His editorship of Cowper's works is, therefore, an appropriate acknowledgement of a distinct 19th century tradition in English poetry - one whose popularity has endured to this day.
