A female figure as a personification of innocence washes her hands in a basin on a stand. She looks back to the background, where Christ is depicted before Pontius Pilate. This alludes to the scene in which Pilate, unwilling to take moral responsibility for Christ's trial, washes his hands (in innocence). Zij kijkt om naar de achtergrond, waar Christus voor Pontius Pilatus is afgebeeld. Hiermee wordt gezinspeeld op de scène waarin Pilatus, die de morele verantwoordelijkheid voor de berechting van Christus niet op zich wilde nemen, zijn handen (in onschuld) wast.
