London, William Lewis, 1814-1816. Leather. A two volume illustrated set of Poems by William Cowper. Bound in half leather and marbled paper-covered boards, with gilt lettering. Volume I is dated 1816. Volume II is dated 1814. William Cowper, 1731 – 1800, was an English poet and hymnodist. One of the most popular poets of his time, Cowper changed the direction of 18th century nature poetry by writing of everyday life and scenes of the English countryside. In many ways, he was one of the forerunners of Romantic poetry. Cowper suffered from severe manic depression, and although he found refuge in a fervent evangelical Christianity, the inspiration behind his much-loved hymns, he often experienced doubt and feared that he was doomed to eternal damnation. Bound in half leather and marbled paper-covered boards, with gilt lettering. There is mild wear to the extremities, including bumping and rubbing. The inner hinges are strained. The front free-endpaper of volume 1 is partially detached, and pages 339-342 are held by two cords only. The bindings are generally tight and firm. Internally the pages have slight browning to the edges, with the occasional spot and handling mark. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
