William Cowper is considered a forerunner of the Romantics for his subject matter, everyday life and the English countryside. Many of the poems published in this work were written on recovery of his attack of insanity, where he believed he was eternally condemned to hell and that God was urging him to take his own life, the John Gilpin of The History of John Gilpin, is reported to have saved him life. Some of the poems included in the work are; The History of John Gilpin, Table Talk, The Task and The Fame for 1788-1793. In a morocco binding. Externally, sound with marks to boards. Bumping and rubbing to corners and head and tail of spines. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound with cockling and foxing to pages and tidemarks to first few pages of volume II. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
