With Twenty-Seven Illustrations on Steel by Phiz. Plate Five, 'The Hunt' is missing. Bound from the Parts. George Payne Rainsford James, 1801 - 1860, was an English novelist, and later British consul in Virginia. "James also wrote poetry and drama and was an active author and editor of popular historical works" -ODNB. In original half calf binding and held in cloth covered boards. There is rubbing with edge wear, prominent to the spine, with slight loss. The joints are starting, and the inner hinges are strained. The binding is tight and firm. Internally the pages are generally bright with some foxing and marks. The plates have singeing, with browning and spots, and occasionally slight loss. There is a closed tear across page 143 that has been repaired to the fore-edge margin only. There is occasional singeing throughout, with slight loss to some pages, including page 193-195.
