London, John Bourne, 1817. Leather. A scarce religious text written by noted Nonconformist leader Philip Doddridge. In an attractive quarter calf binding. The book includes chapters on promoting work as a means to encourage religion, as well as directives on maintaining communion with God. With a a portrait of Doddridge to the frontispiece. Philip Doddridge was a London born minister, educator and hymn-writer, who had a church named after him in Northampton. In quarter-calf binding with gilt detailing and paper-covered boards. Externally sound. Some wear to the boards, extremities, joints and backstrip as well as some rubbing. The hinge is also strained. Internally, the binding is tender but holding aside some partially detached pages with large closed tears towards the book's centre. There are tide marks, foxing and handling marks throughout, although the text remains clear. There are also ink inscriptions to the endpages and title page. Good Only . Ill.: Unamed. Good Only .
