James Boswell - The Life of Samuel Johnson to Which Is Added the Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides

 1567851577,
London, Sands and Company , 1902. Leather. A copy of Boswell's famous biography of Samuel Johnson. James Boswell is best known for the biography he wrote of one of his contemporaries, the English literary figure Samuel Johnson, which contemporary Johnsonian critic Harold Bloom has claimed is the greatest biography written in the English language. Edited with notes by Percy Fitzgerald. The biography takes many critical liberties with Johnson's life, as Boswell makes various changes to Johnson's quotations and even censors many comments. Regardless of these actions, modern biographers have found Boswell's biography as an important source of information. The work was popular among early audiences and with modern critics, but some of the modern critics believe that the work cannot be considered a proper biography. Prize bookplate to front pastedown. In a full tree-calf binding. Externally sound, though rubbed. Some wear to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Institutional ink stamp to title page. Pages are browned, with just the odd patch of foxing. Good Only . Ill.: None. Good Only .
