Translated into English by Clara Bell, a popular English translator of popular works. Bell was fluent in French, German, Danish, Dutch, Italian, Norwegian, Russian and Spanish. Georg Ebers was a German egyptoligist and novelist. He was responsible for popularizing Egyptian lore through his historical romances. The Burgomaster's Wife or Die Frau Burgermeisterin is an example of a 16th century historical novel. In a full calf school binding with gilt stamping to the spine and board edges. Externally, generally smart with slight rubbing to the spine and boards. Gilt stamping to the front board is faded. Binder's stamp to verso of front endpaper, Seargeant Bros' Abergavenny.
