London, Hurst, Rees and Orme, 1804. Leather. A collection of three plays (two tragedies and one comedy) from playwright Joanna Baillie. Joanna Baillie (1762 – 1851) was a Scottish poet and dramatist. Baillie was very well known during her lifetime and, though a woman, intended her plays not for the closet but for the stage. Admired both for her literary powers and her sweetness of disposition, she hosted a brilliant literary society in her cottage at Hampstead. Baillie died at the age of 88, her faculties remaining unimpaired to the last. Containing Rayner, The Country Inn, and Constantine Paleologus. Bookplate of Mr. Foott to front pastedown. In a tree-calf binding. Externally rubbed, with some wear to the joints and rear board. Internally, firmly bound. Front hinge strained. Institutional ink stamps to endpapers and throughout.
