Costello (1803-1865) wrote both non-fiction and fiction works after leaving the army in 1828. Much of this novel is set in France, clearly influenced by Costello's time in Paris during the 1830s. The first edition. In a half calf binding with buckram boards with gilt lettering to the spine. Externally, very smart with some discolouration to the buckram, light edgewear and rubbing to the joints. Hinges tender but intact. Slight spotting to the free endpapers with browning to their edges.
