London, Adam and Charles Black, 1912. Disbound. A pleasing copy of this 'Sydney edition' collection of fifty eight essays by the renowned philosopher, statesman and jurist Francis Bacon. This work was reprinted from the edition dated MDCLXXIII. Illustrated with a vignette to the title page, and a photogravure frontispiece from a fine proof impression after an engraving by Simon de Passe. The ornamental letters, title page and binding for this copy was specially designed for this edition by the renowned American book designer and bookbinding artist Albert Angus Turbayne. Featuring a tipped in institutional bookplate of the 'City of Rochester Public Library' to the front pastedown, and the occasional ink stamp throughout. In the publisher's original cloth binding with gilt titles to spine. Externally generally smart, with slight bumping and wear to extremities and head and tail of spine. Fading to spine and extremities of boards, as expected with this colour binding. Slight marking to boards. Hinges slightly strained, but reasonably firm. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean, with the odd spot to the occasional page and the occasional handling mark. Library plate tipped to front pastedown, with a library stamp to the reverse of the title page. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: Various. Very Good Indeed .
