A lovely limited edition set of the correspondence of William Anne, Second Earl of Abermarle during his time as Commander-in-Chief of Scotland; complete in two volumes. Lieutenant-General Willem Anne van Keppel, 2nd Earl of Albemarle was a renowned British diplomat. Throughout his life he held many high positions, including governor of Virginia, Commander-in-Chief of Scotland, Commander-in-Chief of the British forces in the Low Countries, and during peacetime, was an ambassador-extraordinary. Albemarle was made Knight of the Garter in 1749. In 1751 he was appointed Groom of the Stole, and a privy councillor, and in 1752 was one of the Lords Justices during the kings absence in Hanover. A limited edition copy no. 277 of 525 copies, in the publisher's original cloth binding with gilt lettering and gilt armorial decoration for the New Spalding Club. The New Spalding Club was an antiquarian and text publication society founded in Aberdeen in 1886, and named after the seventeenth century historian John Spalding. The society published scholarly editions of texts and archaeological studies relevant to the history of Aberdeenshire; publishing forty-five volumes in its numbered series, including this work. This work was edited by Charles Sanford Terry, a notable English historian who published extensively on Scottish and European history. Copiously illustrated throughout with in-text autograph signatures, and collated complete with five plates to volume I and three plates to volume II. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally lovely with slight wear and bumping to extremities. Slight fading to spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with only the odd spot. Near Fine . Ill.: Various. Near Fine .
