Sophie Cottin (22 March 1770 - 25 August 1807) was a French writer whose novels were popular in the 19th century, and were translated into several different languages. Mathilde was first published in 1805. Great characters, great deeds, ideas of chivalry, the contrast of morals of Christians and Arabs, the luxury of the West opposite to that of the East, the pump and the enthusiasm of religion, form many accessories that enrich and enhance the subject of Matilda. In half calf bindings with marbled boards. Externally generally sound although rubbed, one joint cracked. Internally, firmly bound.
