Driftwood was launched in 1950, Stationary mast could rise as high as a dozen or so feet above deck The Piscataqua River. Gundalow was a flat bottom, narow, beamy craft consturcted low enough to pass under the bridges of the estuary. They were built to maneuver in the strong cross current of the third fastest current in North America. They carried heavy loads sometimes in excewss of 43 tons through shallow wters. Gundalow of various types were also used on the Merrimack River in Massachusetts, the Hampton, NH, Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire and other locations along the New England coast.
