In August 1944 as Russian forces approached Warsaw, the Poles rose with enhusiasm to liberate their capital city. from German oppression, with the arrival of Russian foces near by. They were confronted by a force of SS thugs and convicts, using methods of appalling brutalisy. After two month of heroic resistance they surrendered. The Rusians chose not intervene until the Polish forces were defeated.
