Beck, Nancy R., - Strawbery Banke in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.Portsmouth, NH, Strawbery Banke, Inc., 1966. 1st ptg. VG. Picture of a gundalow on title page, a craft indigenous to the Portsmouth area, designed to carry freight and passengers up. the much bebridged Piscataqua. A cross between a sloop and a scow, it had one short, stumpy mast and a very long yard, rigged with a lateen sail. The yard was affixed to the mast by a chain and iron band, thus enabling it to swing horizontally when passing under bridges. Photos of Portsmouth houses and diagrams of their layouts with their history. Today's visitor to Strawbery Banke steps back 200 years onto streets that once thronged with men engaged in wresting a living from the sea. Piscataqua was a nearly ideal river, protected, ice-free and deep, although it had a strong and wily current.
