Mancini, Gioacchino, - Villa Adriana e Villa d'Este; Hadrian's Villa and Ville d'Este (in Engligh and Italian).

Roma, La Liberia dello Stato, nd. VG PB. Itineraries to the museums and monuments in Italy. Little is known with certainty about the sumptuous residence of Hadrian. beyond fragmentary historical records. Work began iupon a villa near Tibur (Tivolti) where he intended to spend the last days of his life in peaceful pomp. It began in the year 126 upon his return from his first tour of inspection in the Eastern domains of the Empire. It seems strange that a man of such refined taste as Hadrian should have built himself a villa in this unattractive site unless he intended it to be a residence for the winter months, the climate there being mild and pleasant. Owner notes, beginning pages wrinkled.
