Born in Madrid in 1883, Jose was one of the intellectual leaders of the Spanish Republican government. After the establishement of the Republic, he became a member of Parliament and also held for many years the chair of metaphysics at the University of Madrid and was editor of an influential journal of opinion. Albert Camus considered him after Nietzsche "perhaps the greatest European writer, and yet it would be difficult to be more Spanish." Owner name ft cover and ft endpaper.
