Indianapolis had just delivered a secret cargo that. would trigger the end of WWII. As she continued westward, her captain asked for a destroyer escort but was told it wasn't necessary. She was torpedoed & sunk by a Japanese submarine & in 12 minutes some 300 men went down with her. More than 900 others spent 4 days in the ocean with no water to drink, savaged by the sun & swarms of sharks and no one knew they were the until a Navy patrol plane accidentally discovered them. 316 crewmen survived. Originally published in 1958 now with new introduction & afterword supplies the answer as to why.
