The first of the new journals was The Constitution, a daily newspaper launched on March 20 under the editorship of Leopold Häfner, 'a malcontent of the lower middle class who envied & hated everyone who wore a better coat and had better manners than he had'. From the beginning Häfner used his paper to attack priests and monks, men of wealth, aristocrats, bureaucrats, the Emperor's personal advisers and other prominent personages who aroused his enmity.
