LAWRENCE, THOMAS EDWARD: - Seven Pillars of Wisdom, A Triumph. London, Jonathan Cape, 1935.

. Large 4to. Pp. 672. With frontispiece, four folding maps, 47 photographic plates, of which four coloured, six illustrations in the text, and three facsimiles of manuscripts. Publisher's quarter morocco on buckram covered boards, spine gilt, gilt vignette on upper cover, marbled endpapers, t.e.g., others uncut. A few small scratches on the front cover, a few stains on the outer edges. Original dust jacket, with tears and spine partially missing. Housed in a specially made cloth box. First trade edition, limited to 750 copies, of which this is no. 68. Lawrence's famous autobiographical account of his legendary part in the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Turks between the years 1916-18. He did not believe the text would be of interest to the general public and at first allowed only limited publications for friends (in 1922) and subscribers (in 1926). The Seven Pillars is lavishly illustrated with photographic plates and portraits from sketches and folding maps. The illustrators were the best British artists of the day: Wadsworth, Nash, Roberts, Blair Hughes-Stanton, Dobson, William Nicholson and others. Also included is a copy of the Times from May 1935 with a two-page editorial on Lawrence and testimonials from friends and colleagues including David Lloyd George and Winston Churchill. A handsome copy of this celebrated work, called by Churchill "one of the greatest books ever written in the English language". O'Brien A041.
