SOUTHEY (Robert): - The Poet's Pilgrimage to Waterloo:

London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown..., 1816. FIRST EDITION. 12mo, 158 x 97 mms., pp. [viii], 232, engraved frontispiece, 7 engraved plates, contemporary half calf, gilt spine, marbled boards; joints and spine rubbed, boards slightly rubbed, but a good copy. This work was one of Southey's more successful ones, going through three editions very quickly, and it attracted positive reviews. The Annti-Jacobin Review commented that "We have accompanied Mr. Southey through his pilgrimage with unmixed pleasure, with satisfaction unalloyed"; while Jospeh Conder was glad to see that "heroical descriptions of the battle itself" were avoided. The critic for The Monthly Review seemed very pleased with himself for being able to discern the poem's merits: "we have analyzed and synthesized the properties and peculiarities of Mr. Southey's muse on several occasions, we shall only now have the more pleasing task to perform, of justifying our preceding praise by various selections from this most interesting little volume."
