Her 1974 book 'Pilgrim at Tinker Creek' won the 1975 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction. 'Holy the Firm' (1977) contemplates the problem of pain and God's allowance of "natural evil to happen". It was inspired by a plane crash on Lummi Island, where Dillard had been staying for three days with the aim of writing whatever happened within that time. 'Encounters with Chinese Writers' (1984) is a work of journalism, with Dillard hosting a group of Chinese writers, whom she takes to Disneyland along with Allen Ginsberg. 'Holy the Firm' bound in the original quarter cloth, and 'Encounters with Chinese Writers' bound in full cloth.
