This illustrated edition of William Cowper's poem limited to 1,600 copies. In the original wraps with adhered dust wrapper. 'The Diverting History of John Gilpin' is a beloved comic ballad originally written in 1782 by popular English poet William Cowper, concerning a draper called John Gilpin who rides a runaway horse. Its popularity resulted in pirate copies being sold across the country, together with Gilpin books and toys. This edition is charmingly illustrated by Ronald Searle, an English satirical cartoonist best remembered as the creator of 'St Trinian's School' and his collaboration with Geoffrey Willans on the 'Molesworth' series.  In the original wraps with adhered dust wrapper. Externally, very smart, with sunning to the spine and a small closed tear to the spine head. With general shelf wear and a couple minor marks to the rear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with the odd spot to the endpapers. Very Good Indeed .
