Retaining the original half titles.This is Clarendon's exhaustive account of the history of English rebellions and civil wars. Originally published between 1702 and 1704, this work was begun during Clarendon's exile in the late 1640s, and was revised after his fall from royal favour in 1667. Clarendon was a close advisor to two kings - Charles I and Charles II - and came under scrutiny for his involvement in these reigns.Edward Hyde was an English statesman. He was Lord Chancellor to King Charles II and was responsible for building the royalist cause. He wrote several influential works of history especially the contemporary history of the Civil War. Hyde's loyalties to the King are clear through his memoir. Hyde was also the maternal grandfather of Queen Mary II and Queen Anne.With the bookplate of R. E. Maddison to front pastedowns.
