Part I only of two volumes. Illustrated throughout by Bertall, with monochrome vignettes and a hand coloured frontispiece. An illustrated edition of Alexandre Dumas' version of Hoffmann's celebrated tale 'The History of a Nutcracker', which was subsequently adapted into a ballet in the late 1800s.Originally written as a novel by Theodore Amadeus Hoffman, this tale became much more widely known through Dumas' version, which was written for younger children and published in numerous editions and translations. A Christmas classic, 'The History of the Nutcracker' follows two children who are gifted some presents by their family, one of which is a nutcracker which comes to life to defend the children against an evil mouse army. Bound in full cloth. Externally, smart, with wear to the backstrip head and tears to the rear joint. Internally, frontispiece is detached but present. Otherwise, firmly bound.
