First published by Macmillan in 1903. With the publisher's original unclipped dust wrapper. This work's original publication stood as the only comprehensive study of Taiwan in the English language, resulting from Davidson's dedicated research on the subject in many languages to produce his magnum opus. The book has gone through several reprints, and remains a central work in the study of the history of Taiwan, tracing from the beginning of Dutch rule in 1514 to the early 20th-century. This edition illustrated with two new coloured maps (one of which is folding), coloured frontispiece, thirty-five plates containing many illustrations from photographs, and a coloured reproduction of two Chinese posters.
