A beautiful first edition of this collection of eighteenth century verses from poet and essayist Austin Dobson, illustrated throughout by Hugh Thomson. With 'Life's journey lengthens' rather than 'The long day lengthens' in the dedicatory poem. Irish illustrator Thomson was best known for his pen-and-ink illustrations of works by authors including Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and J. M. Barrie. Thomson inaugurated the 'Cranford School' of illustration with the publication of his 1891 Macmillan edition of Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford. In the publisher's original decorative cloth binding. Externally, smart, except for a small section of damp staining to the lower corner of the boards. Internally, firmly bound.
