Given to me by John Piper and Myfanwy [his wife], who both brought over a splendid picnic lunch [..] I have little to offer them; but they have been staunch and loyal friends for over 40 years [..] their friendship has been incomparable&apos. This inscription is dated 14 October 1986.The same associate of Piper offers notes and annotations to fifteen pages, supplying personal notes including the reminiscence that Piper's cat was always referred to simply as 'pussy', and that a piece of pottery illustrated in this volume was made at his kiln in Fawley, inspired by majolica.With monochrome illustrations, and essays supplied by the Queen Mother, Quentin Bell, Stephen Spender, and others. In the publisher's original pictorial paper covered boards. Externally, fine. Inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound.
