The astronomer, linguist, and scholar Guillaume Postel (1510 - 1581) published quite a number of books in his lifetime, though he is said to have lived much longer than the dates shown here, reaching the grand old age of 85. He is also remembered for believing that Christ had made his second coming, or at least returned to earth, in the body of a Venetian woman. He learned languages easily, mastering Latin, Hebrew, and Arabic in short order. He is especially known for his attempts to unify all religions, though his efforts were not successful, to say the least. He was examined by the Inquisition, who judged him mad and confined him to a monastery. The present work was first published in 1563, and this third edition seems to have been one of the more popular reprints of his ouevre.
