The first edition, first impression. In the original dust wrapper, with dust wrapper price to front flyleaf tail roughly torn away.Set in the fictional South Riding of Yorkshire, the novel follows a cast of characters include an idealistic young headmistress, a socialist fighting against poverty, and the first woman alderman on the county council.Holtby is best known for this work, and for her lifelong friendship with the prominent diarist Vera Brittain, who edited this work.This novel won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 1936, and has never been out of print.
