A smart gilt-decorated pocket book containing the poetical works of William Cowper, from the library of revolutionary physician, Henry Wentworth Acland. In full contemporary crushed morocco binding, with decorative gilt and dentelles. A charming pocket book containing the works of English poet and Anglican hymnwriter, William Cowper, who is noted for his influence in the direction of 18th-cenury nature poetry. With a frontispiece and vignette title page. From the library of English physician and educator, Henry Wentworth Acland, with a contemporary gift inscription dated 1828 to the verso of the front free endpaper. Acland took a leading part in the revival of the Oxford medical school and introduced the study of natural science into the university. He was a lifelong friend of John Ruskin and accompanied the then Prince of Wales as his physician on his Canada and United States tour in 1860. With 'Mitcham' and the matching date gilt stamped to the spine tail, referencing Mitcham Grove (of which is also mentioned in the ink inscription), a country house near Mitcham, Surrey. In full crushed morocco binding with gilt detailing. Externally, smart, with rubbing to the extremities, heaviest to the spine. A couple marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with scattered spots to the first and last few leaves. Contemporary ink inscription to the verso front free endpaper. Good . Ill.: R. Westall. Good .
