With twenty-four full page illustrations by British caricaturist and book illustrator, George Cruikshank, who was known for his contributions to the works of Charles Dickens, among many other prominent authors of the time. This delightful work explores the popular puppet-show, Punch and Judy, containing the dialogue of a puppet show, an account of its origin, and the history of puppet plays in England. An uncommon work, surrounding the history of one of Britain's earliest puppet shows.Lacking the publisher's advertisements. Bound in half calf with cloth boards. Externally, sound, with rubbing to the extremities and joints, causing a little loss to the head of the spine. Marks to boards. Front endpaper is adhered to the front paste down at the hinge, possibly due to previous glue repair. Front hinge is a little strained between front blanks, with rear hinge also a little strained, both holding firm. Internally, firmly bound.
