The first edition of the first two volumes of Curtis's monumental work, which eventually extended to sixteen volumes and over seven hundred plates.Volume I is illustrated with fifty hand coloured plates, and volume II is illustrated with forty-eight colour plates. Collated, complete.The hand colouring of these plates was undertaken almost exclusively by Joseph Standish and his family.Almost every plate includes an equally well rendered botanical element, often the dominant part of the illustration.These two volumes are both dedicated to Coleoptera, or beetles, and offer a detailed account of their biology and the conditions and locations in which they can be found.Both volumes are bound together, with individual title pages and pagination.Fascinating works of natural history. In a half calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, very smart. Front hinge strained, but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound.
