The two volume first edition of this work, in half morocco bindings.Illustrated with a frontispieces to each volume, and with four further plates to each volume. Collated, complete.Author Charles St John was an English naturalist and sportsman. His account of the stalking of the Muckle Hart of Benmore and was influential in the development of Scottish red deer stalking, and has been described as a classic among deer-stalkers. In this work, he gives an account of his exploration of Sutherland, as well as hunting, fishing, and the natural history of the area.With a sixteen page publisher's catalogue to the rear of volume II, dated January 1849.With the bookplate of T & M James to each front pastedown.With a contemporary inscription to a front blank of volume I, dated 1859. In half morocco bindings, with marbled paper covered boards. Back strips significantly age toned, with rubbing to back strip head and tail, joints, and board perimeters. Head of rear joint of volume I starting, with board firmly held. Endpapers renewed. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Inscription to front blank of volume I. Internally, firmly bound.
