A mid eighteenth century wooden binding containing faint ink and pencil notations from the contemporary owner, which identify a number of Italian artistic movements. A highly decorative binding, with carved wooden boards, metal clasps, and watered silk doublures.Consisting of ninety leaves, the majority of which feature pencil or ink inscriptions, and are interleaved with tissue guards. The final eight leaves are left blank.Eleven leaves feature ink headings referring to Italian artistic movements: the Paduan School; Bolognese School; Ferrarese School; Umbrian School; Roman School; Tuscan School; Sienese School; Venetian School; Lombard School; Genoese School, and Neopolitan School.The majority of leaves feature faint pencil notations in the hand of a contemporary owner, with these inscriptions being initials, presumably of artists belonging to each respective school.The binding bears an engraved crest to the centre of the front board reading 'Italien 1864&apos. In cloth backed carved wooden boards, with metal clasps. Lacking majority of back strip. Boards very smart. Carved wooden buckles to head and tail of front board, with carved crest to centre of front board. The two metal clasps to the text block fore edge are in full working order. Joints starting, with hinges firmly held. Watered silk doublures. Internally, binding a touch strained. Leaves lightly age toned, and interleaved with tissue guards. Ink headings to eleven leaves, with faint pencil initials to all but the final eight leaves are blank. Light handling marks and spotting throughout. Good Only . Ill.: None. Good Only .
