A 6 volume title, lacking volume 5, thus incomplete. 27.2 x 18.7 cm. String-bound, Japanese-style, fukuro-toji. The colophon lists the original edition as being from 1780 [An'ei 9] and the copy at hand a "recut, reprinted" expanded edition published in 1786 [Temmei 6]. In the original covers with printed paper title labels. There is a final 2 page advertisement for the publisher's other "meishoki" geographical gazetteers. Takehara ShunchÅ�sai 竹原信ç¹� (竹原æoe�æ–Ž) was considered an expert in the genre of meishoki, and this particular work "shows how the guide drew the attention of the traveller to every kind of entertainment, to establishments for arts and crafts, refreshment houses and the like." See Jack Hillier, "The Art of the Japanese Book" pp. 562-3. The covers are a bit worn and soiled; the binding string is broken on vol 1. The printing is good overall; the interior clean. Very useful, and a very interesting guide to the KyÅ�to area in the late 18th century. .
