A scarce English translation.Complete in two volumes.Volume II is the first edition of Earbery's translation into English, Volume I is the second edition of Earbery's translation.Illustrated with a frontispiece to Volume II. Sixteen pages of adverts to the rear of Volume II.'Of the State of the Dead' is Thomas Burnet's philosophical treatise in which he argues against the belief in the endless punishment of the wicked and those who have done wrong. An interesting religious and philosophical treatise.Burnet originally only printed a few copies of this work for his friends, and was distributed in a wider publication in 1720, after the author's death.This translation, by Matthias Earbery, includes "an answer to all the heresies therein". Ink inscription of Isabella Drake to the recto of the front free endpapers, dated 1728. In a full calf binding. Externally, the front board of Volume I is detached but present. Front joint and hinge of Volume II is starting, small crack to the head and tail of the rear joint. Light discolouration to the spines, and to the extremities of the boards. Minor bumping to the extremities. A very small amount of loss to the head of the spines. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front free endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with scattered spots. Good Only . Ill.: None. Good Only .
