This work features a 'complete work' titled 'The First Christmas', and billed as 'forming the January part' of the periodical.Inscribed to the verso of the front wrap by publisher Alexander Strahan. Strahan published what was arguably one of the dominant periodicals in the mid nineteenth century, a monthly magazine called 'Good Words&apos. He established the journal 'The Day of Rest: An Illustrated Journal of Sunday Reading' in 1872.Strahan's inscription reads 'to Bertha, this, the 3rd copy printed of the first coloured magazine with all birthday love A Strahan', dated 10th December 1881, Edinburgh.Illustrated with eight full colour plates, and with colour borders and vignette illustrations to each page of text.From the library of A. P. Watt & A. S. Watt of A. P. Watt and Son, literary agent of Rudyard Kipling. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Wraps detached.
