BURNHAM, Samuel - Victor's Stories, for Boys and Girls

186. [BURNHAM, Samuel]. VICTOR'S STORIES, FOR BOYS AND GIRLS. By the writer of "Uncle Paul's Stories." Boston: The American Tract Society, n.d. [1865, cf. The American Catalogue of Books, 1861-1866, p. 222]. Illustrated with a wood-engraved frontispiece with printed color, with a tissue guard, and wood-engraved illustrations and small vignette illustrations throughout text. Many of the illustrations are by John N. Hyde and were engraved by Samuel Cloues, Nathaniel Rudd, and "Peirce" (perhaps William J. Pierce?). Included among the moral tales, on pp. 44-46, is a brief remembrance of the American Tract Society engraver Samuel Cloues and a report of his early death. iv, [5]-144 pp. Small quarto, 19.5 x 15 cm, green cloth publisher's binding: title within a decorative design in gilt to spine, triple ruled in blind on sides with a pictorial vignette gilt-stamped in the center of the upper board. Contemporary ink ownership ("Oliver R. Baker, 1868") on first fly-leaf. Binding is gently bumped and the cloth worn at fore-corners, with shallow loss at crown and fraying at heel, and shows some general light soiling. The tissue guard has a few small spots, with light offsetting to the title-page, and there is occasional light staining and soiling throughout the bookblock. Still it is an appealing book in very good condition. .
