 1567893241,
London, Judy" Office, 1878. First edition. Leather. A scarce and entertaining collection of cartoons from the satirical magazine Judy, centred around William Gladstone, from 1867 to 1878. The first edition of this work in a full limp morocco binding.Ink inscription to the engraved title page, dated 1878. Sixty-nine cartoons, each spread over two pages, from the satirical magazine Judy; or the London Serio-Comic Journal, from 18th September 1867 to 14th August 1878. Through these clever and amusing cartoons, the Judy magazine sought to satirize the British Liberal Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898) and his decisions during his time in office. This work provides an interesting insight into historical British media and political opinions which prevailed in the latter half of the 19th century, particularly from those supporting the Conservative party.Collated, complete. In a full limp morocco binding. Externally sound, though a trifle rubbed. Hinges are slightly strained but held firmly. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are a little age-toned but generally clean.
